چکیده

BACKGROUND Due to the extensive use of phosphates in industry, agriculture and households, the phosphate - γ-alumina interactions are important for understanding its detrimental contribution to eutrophication in lakes and rivers. In situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy can provide more detailed information on the adsorbate-adsorbent interaction and the formation of hydrogen bonds. RESULTS In situ ATR-FTIR spectroscopy was used to identify phosphate complexes adsorbed within the three-dimensional network of mesoporous γ-alumina at pH 4.1 and 9.0. The integrated intensity between 850 cm-1 and 1250 cm-1 was used as a relative measure of the amount of adsorbed phosphate. The integrated intensity proved to be about 3 times higher at pH 4.1 as compared with the corresponding intensity at pH 9.0. The adsorption of phosphate at the two pH conditions could be well described by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm at low concentrations and the empirical Freundlich adsorption isotherm for the whole concentration range, viz. 5 - 2000 μM. CONCLUSIONS From the band shape of infrared spectra at pH 4.1 and pH 9.0, it was proposed that the symmetry of the inner-sphere surface complex formed between phosphate and γ-alumina was C1 at the lower pH value, whilst the higher value (9.0) implied a surface complex with C2v or C1 symmetry. The difference in adsorbed amount of phosphate at the two pH values was ascribed to the reduced fraction of ≡ AlOH2+ surface sites and the increased fraction of ≡ AlO- sites upon increasing pH from 4 to 9.

Role of Alumina Basicity in CO2 Uptake in 3-Aminopropylsilyl-Grafted Alumina Adsorbents.

Oxide-supported amine materials are widely known to be effective CO2 sorbents under simulated flue-gas and direct-air-capture conditions. Most work has focused on amine species loaded onto porous silica supports, though potential stability advantages may be offered through the use of porous alumina supports. Unlike silica materials, which are comparably inert, porous alumina materials can be tu...

Zinc Adsorption Properties of Alginate-SBA-15 Nanocomposite

Assessment of adsorption zinc (II) ions from aqueous solution using alginate-SBA-15 sorbent nanocomposite was investigated as a function of zinc concentration, solution pH, and contact time. For that purpose, the alginate-SBA-15 nanocomposite adsorbent was prepared through encapsulation method by immobilization mesoporous SBA-15 into a polymeric matrix. Identification of functional groups and s...

We studied selenate and selenite sorption by amorphous Fe oxide [am-Fe(OH)3] and goethite (a-FeOOH) as a function of time (25 min-96 h), pH (3-12), ionic strength (0.01-1.0 M NaCl), and total Se concentration (0.0001-1.0 M). We examined sorbed selenate and selenite by in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier tr...

Sorption of the antibiotic ofloxacin to mesoporous and nonporous alumina and silica.

Mesoporous and nonporous SiO(2) and Al(2)O(3) adsorbents were reacted with the fluoroquinolone carboxylic acid ofloxacin over a range of pH values (2-10) and initial concentrations (0.03-8 mM) to investigate the effects of adsorbent type and intraparticle mesopores on adsorption/desorption. Maximum ofloxacin adsorption to SiO(2) surfaces occurs slightly below the pK(a2) (pH 8.28) of the antibio...
